The images in this collection have been gathered from various archives, libraries, and historical societies as part of our research into the African presence in early California. Many of these photographs are rare and provide important visual documentation of individuals and places significant to this history.

It's important to note that cameras were not widely accessible during early California. Most photographs of individuals from these eras were taken later in their lives, as photography became more accessible. Paintings, drawings, and maps from earlier periods help fill in the visual record.
